Rare Breeds that Vanished: How Did They Vanish? There are so many different breeds of cats that have disappeared from the American gene pool, and it is amazing to think about the number of those breeds that actually survived into the 20th century. There are certain breeds that disappeared because they were malnourished or they were over bred, or because their temperament was not right, or because they were afflicted by a disease. Some of these breeds that disappeared were known as giant felines, and they were known for being rather large, muscular animals.

1.   Cocker Spaniel

The first of the eccentric dog breeds that vanished from the world were the Cocker Spaniel. They are smaller than most other dogs, and this made them a favorite with farmers. Farmers loved these dogs because they could be used to retrieve the eggs when they were not able to be picked up in the house. Cocker Spaniels made excellent watchdogs for their owners. Unfortunately, these dogs disappeared from North America after the Second World War.

The next of the strange dog breeds that vanished was the

2.   Alaskan Malamute.

These dogs had a thick coat and they were quite large, over twenty pounds. The Alaskan Malamute was good-natured and friendly, but they had a great deal of energy and they could get very bored if you did not keep them active. These dogs were very affectionate toward children, but they could become very possessive. They loved to chew anything and everything, including shoes and glasses. When the owner tried to make the dog stop barking, the Alaskan Malamute would reply by growling at him. Here is one of the very best dog cages with a divider is really the Life Stages Single Panel Folding Crate. You can find it at Cozy Crates.

3.   Then there is the Doberman pinscher, also known as the Pinscher.

These dogs had a long coat and they were quite large, sometimes weighing in the hundred pounds. The Doberman Pincher had a strange, wandering behavior and they were very territorial toward other dogs and other animals. They loved to play fetch, but it was not very fun for the owner because these dogs could catch anything. If a cat or other small animal was near them, they would snap at the little animal.

4.   Goldensport

The third of the strange dog breeds that disappeared was the Goldensport. These dogs were very loyal and they loved to guard. The owner was able to train them well, but the dog would always get ahead and try to take over the house. They were not very friendly and the owner was afraid that they might chase cats and steal their toys. These dogs also were very defensive of their territory. Once the owner gave a Goldensport its very own doggie door, the dogs disappeared from view.

5.   Bulldog

The final of the strange dog breeds that disappeared was the Bulldog. These dogs were originally bred for hunting small animals and for fighting other dogs. They had a very powerful smell and they were also stocky and built like all other bulldogs. The owner of the original Bulldog breed, an English bulldog named Brutus, bred many more types of dogs and the name became standard for all future Bulldog breeds. The original Brutus didn’t mind that his dogs looked a little strange but he accepted them for what they were and they accepted him for what he was.

So, we have four of the oddest dog breeds that vanished. We also have an unknown dog breed that may be extinct or a dog that has been hybrid. All of these dogs had one thing in common though. None of them was a show dog or a pet for the owner. They were simply members of the family and part of the clan. No one raised them as a pet or took care of them like their brothers and sisters.

6.   The Tarra

This brings us to our last strange dog breeds that vanished. The Tarra is a very rare breed. There are believed to be only about twenty of these dogs left in the world. One of the reasons for their disappearing act is that there was so much competition from other breeds that they were quickly surpassed. The Tarra was very good at herding so they were prized for that reason. However, their strange habits and stubbornness made them nearly extinct.

The strange dog breeds that disappeared are just a few of the many that existed during the Ice age. Some of the dogs survived and some did not. Some became a part of our society and became a part of our families and some just disappeared. Now that you know a little more about them you can understand how important they were to their owners and to our history.

When you go to breed a purebred American kitty, and you see one of those rare breeds that vanished, it can be quite a traumatizing experience. You often feel like you just lost a part of yourself, a family member, a friend. The thought of never seeing your cat again may make you weep, but there is no reason for pity. You will never see your cat again, and you can go back and get her again. You just have to look.
