Ajmer is a prominent and oldest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, as well as the administrative centre of the Ajmer District. Being situated in the heart of Rajasthan it is known as the state’s heart. The city was built as “Ajayameru” (translated as “Invincible Hills”) by a Chahamana ruler and served as their capital until the 12th century CE.
Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. Ajmer has been a municipality since 1869. Ajmer has been picked as one of India’s historic cities for the HRIDAY and Smart City Mission programmes.
Ajmer also serves as a railway junction station for the Delhi-Jaipur and Jaipur-Ahmedabad lines. The Ajmer bus station is the primary bus terminal in the district, run by Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation. It is located 2 kilometres from the Ajmer railway junction and provides bus services to other regions of the state as well as neighbouring states Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
