Are you confused about the difference between a duvet, comforter and quilt? Many of you are.
Here’s a primer so you will know when to use each of them, and which one is right for you.
Quilts
Quilts are multilayered blankets made by combining a layer of padding between two layers of fabric. Originally quilts were layers of fabric and padding that were stitched together. In the beginning, any spare fabric was used to make the quilt. This resulted in unique one-of-a-kind patterns.
Quilts are generally thinner than other kinds of bedding and might not be as warm.
The history of quilting goes back to ancient times. One of the earliest surviving quilts was found in a Mongolian cave. It dates back to between 100 BCE and 200 CE.
Quilts evolved over the years into decorative bed coverings that displayed fine needlework and distinctive patterns of the maker.
Today, quilts have evolved to include a wide variety of functional, decorative and artistic styles. Here you can see an example of a modern double bed quilt cover.
Duvets
Duvets are thin removable layers that require protective covers. Duvet comes from the French word for down, the fluffy feathers on the stomach and chest of ducks and other waterfowl. These feathers keep the bird warm and insulated from the water.
Duvets were originally made with down due to its softness and warmth. Today down is still used, but there are other options like wool or cotton.
Duvets are big fabric pockets filled with an insulating material. The insert is placed inside a duvet cover and attached to the outer layer with strings or buttons. The cover protects the insert from dirt and adds decoration.
Duvets can be more expensive than comforters or quilts, particularly if they are down-filled. If it becomes worn or stained, you only need to replace the cover rather than the entire piece.
Comforters
Comforters are made from two layers of material sewn together and then packed with an insulating layer. The usual materials are cotton or polyester for the outside, and down, wool, or cotton.
Comforters come in a variety of colours, patterns, and styles. Comforters tend to have less height than a duvet. As a result, they might not be as warm and could require an extra blanket on the coldest nights.
Comforters can be less expensive than either quilts or duvets due to the use of less expensive materials.
Choosing the best option for you depends on your specific needs and preferences.
Quilts tend to sleep cooler, which makes them preferable in warmer climates. Quilts can be made by a family or friend, in which case they have a special sentimental value.
Comforters come in a wide range of colours and materials. The all-in-one design means there is no need for an additional cover. Comforters make a good year-round choice for many sleepers.
If you prefer a softer feel and more loft, select a duvet. It comes with the option of just changing the cover for cleaning or choosing a different design.
Selecting the right bedding enhances your overall bedroom experience and promotes a restful night’s sleep.
