Most people when looking for a ceiling fan, make a purchase based on just two criteria – ceiling fan price and the look and style of the fan. They don’t pay much attention to other important factors that determine how effective the fan is in terms of air delivery.  And while we don’t say that one shouldn’t be considering those two criteria, one should also be considering other important factors, some of which (the important ones) we have discussed in this post. Come, let’s take a look.

1. Blade Sweep

Often, people think that the number of blades in a fan is the right criterion for choosing a fan. But, the fact is that the number of fan blades doesn’t impact the performance of a fan in any way. It’s just a personal choice that depends on what aesthetic value one perceives of it. Instead, it is the blade sweep of a fan that one needs to consider when buying a fan.

So what is blade sweep?

Blade sweep (or blade span) is the diameter of the circle that we see when a fan rotates (or is in motion). Typically, ceiling fans in India range between 600mm(approx. 24 inches ) to 1400mm (approx. 56 inches ).

To determine the right sweep of the fan, you need to consider the room size where you would be installing the fan.

For example –

  • Smaller rooms (less than 50 sq. feet) would require a fan with a blade sweep of 600 to 900 mm.
  • A 50 to 75 sq. feet room would require a fan with 900 to 1200 mm blade sweep.
  • A 75 to 160 sq. feet room would require a fan with 1200 mm blade sweep.

2. Air Delivery

Air delivery is the volume of air that a fan displaces in a minute. It is measured in CMM (Cubic Meters per minute). Usually, an air delivery of 230 CMM is considered to be a good air delivery. The air delivery also depends on the speed of the fan. A fan that runs on a higher speed, generates more airflow. If you compare the air delivery of fans from different brands, you will find that Luminous stands apart.

3. Fan Speed

The speed of a fan is measured in RPM (rotations per minute). Typically, fans can be categorized into two types based on their speed – High Speed and Normal Speed. The normal speed fans run at around 330/340 RPM whereas high speed fans run at 370/380 RPM. To achieve the best airflow from your ceiling fan, buy a fan that comes with multiple speed settings.

4. Power Consumption

The power a ceiling fan consumes is measured in Watts. Higher the wattage, more is the power consumption. It’s a misconception that fans with higher wattages deliver better air flow. Fans from reputable brands like Luminous come with lower wattages and still perform better than fans with higher wattages. That’s because ceiling fans from Luminous are optimally designed and manufactured using the best materials which make them highly efficient even with low power consumption.

5. Length of the Down Rod

The length of the down rod is an important factor to consider when buying a ceiling fan. To ensure safety, the down rod size should be such that the distance between the ceiling fan and the floor should be a minimum 7 to 7.5 feet.

Choosing the right downrod size is important not only in terms of ensuring safety, but also in terms of generating adequate air flow (that depends on the distance between the ceiling and the blades). For an adequate air flow, the downrod size should be such that the distance between the ceiling and the blades should be around 9 to 10 inches.

Conclusion

These were some of the important factors that one needs to consider when buying a ceiling fan. There are some other factors, too, such as color, style, fan with lights or without, and more. But, these are factors that depend on personal choice. Ceiling fan price is also one of the factors. If you, too, are looking to buy a ceiling fan and would like to buy a fan that not just gives the best performance, but also goes with the aesthetics of your room, we recommend you to check out the wide range of ceiling fans Luminous has to offer.
