These days, people often rely on their phones or fitness trackers to keep time for them. It makes sense, as around 85% of Americans now own a smartphone. Most people keep their phones within easy reach, so the information is always at hand.
In the olden days of not that long ago, though, most people relied on a watch. Not a digital watch either, but an analog watch that used tiny gears and springs to keep time. While less in favor these days, analog watches offer a few big advantages of their digital competition.
Keep reading for three of those benefits.
1. Longevity/Durability
One of the persistent challenges with digital devices is that they require frequent recharging. You must plug most smartphones in on a daily basis to keep them running. Modern fitness trackers don’t always need daily recharging, but you should expect to recharge them at least once a week.
With an analog watch, a single battery will keep the device running for years. On top of that, analog watches are often more durable than their digital counterparts. Crack the screen on a digital device and you leave it non-functional. Reading an analog watch remains practical even if you crack the face covering.
2. Appearance
For many people, wearing an analog watch is about creating a specific look. Analog watch faces can verge into the artistic and even beautiful. You can use the watch as part of your fashion choices and accessories, not merely as a functional tool that tells you time and counts your steps.
You can even get multiple analog watches to complement different kinds of outfits. You can get an everyday analog watch that you wear to work that uses neutral colors. Then you can get a fancier watch with, for example, a black watch face to complement formal wear.
3. Easier Adjustments
Let’s say that you come into work, walk over to the Paychex login time clock, and notice that the time on the time clock is different than your watch. You want to make sure you don’t come in too early or too late for work, which means changing your watch to match the time clock.
If you’re wandering around with a digital watch, making that adjustment typically means a lot of button pushing to get the watch into the right mode for adjustments. It’s a pain. If you’re wearing an analog watch, it’s usually a matter of turning a single knob.
You and an Analog Watch
Digital devices like phones and fitness trackers offer you convenience and bells and whistles, but those come at a price. They run out of juice pretty fast, which means constant recharging. They’re also fairly fragile and difficult to adjust.
Analog watches, old school though they are, offer you longevity and durability. You can often get years of faithful service from an analog watch on a lone battery.
They’re easier to adjust and can serve as fashion accessories.
